Preliminary Examination

The Preliminary stage or Prelims is the first and crucial filtering stage with only about 1% of applicants successfully clearing it. While the marks you earn here do not impact your rank, passing this stage is essential to progress further. This stage rigorously evaluates your objectivity, conceptual clarity, and your ability to make sound decisions under pressure.

CSAT is only qualifying in nature, and a candidate must score a minimum of 33% of the total 200 marks to qualify.

GS Paper I Syllabus :

Current events of national and international importance.

History of India and Indian National Movement.

Indian and World Geography – Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.

Indian Polity and Governance – Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.

Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.

General issues on Environmental ecology, Biodiversity and Climate Change – that do not require subject specialization.

General Science.
The second and most crucial stage of the UPSC CSE process is the Mains Stage. This stage thoroughly evaluates candidates' understanding of the subject matter, current issues, and their societal impact. It assesses aspirants' foresightedness and their approach to various issues. Comprising nine subjective papers, this is pivotal for demonstrating a candidate's capabilities.
